Spending the Afternoon with Guchi’s Midnight Ramen

I, like dozens of people in the Boston area, had been obsessed with the idea of Guchi’s Midnight Ramen…the idea of a pop up noodle meal that appears at the witching hour at a random unannounced restaurant & then once again, disappears into the night.  The brains (& cooks) behind Guchi’s have held 3 or 4 events now, but it’s well known how quickly these tickets sell out once they hit Eventbrite…like under 3 seconds.  NO JOKE!

So, when an unexpected announcement appeared on their Facebook page that they were holding a benefit pop up for their friend who got into a bad car accident to help pay his bills, I was definitely interested!  It was Sunday on Memorial Day weekend, most college students were out of town at that point & it was a lovely afternoon 4:00 start time instead of midnight.  I liked my chances for finally getting a taste of that untouchable ramen!  When we got to jm Curley, the site of the pop up, at 3:30, there was already a line 10 people deep. No problem…a simple half hour wait & we were guaranteed first seating :)

The menu was very simple.  Pork belly was the only option for the first course of buns.  Instead of having traditional broth ramen, they were serving mazamen (brothless noodles).  The 3 options were traditional, bacon/egg & crab/uni butter.  That was it!  Simple, flavorful & heartily delicious!  I washed it all down with a Jack Rose cocktail from the jm Curley bar.  I’ll definitely still try for a ticket once Guchi makes another midnight run, but I was very happy to finally satisfy that initial ramen craving ^_^
